To nobody's surprise, the only bid to file -- from the New Jersey/New York Costumers' Guild -- received a majority of the votes with a preference. There were 29 votes cast, plus one person who paid to vote and walked off without casting his/her ballot.

Now I must go pack things away and get some food.

Congrats to Nj/NY Costumers Guild. Two out of the next three years Costume Con will be on the East Coast. I hope to help out in Baltimore next year.

I've heard a rumor that to bid you have to be a 501(c)(3) non-profit. Since I've not researched it I thought this was odd as most bidded events only require a state/provincial non-profit status. What can you tell me?

Thanks in advance :-)

According to the official page on How to Bid for Costume-Con, 501(c)(3) status is "helpful, but not obligatory." Do note, however, that Westercon requires 501(c)(3) status for US-based bidding groups. (This is a requirement I find regrettable.)

Incidentally, the Costume-Con Constitution should look familiar to anyone who is conversant with the Westercon Bylaws.

Thanks for the update. I knew it sounded odd. I'll follow up on the source and let them know.

And what I get for not looking up the actual rule (section 3.4 of the Westercon Bylaws is that Westercon requires US-based groups to be state non-profit organizations, but does not require federal 501(c)(3) status.

If there were a motion to repeal this section it might entice me back to the Westercon business meeting. I've had my fingers singed the last few times and I'd rather skip that pain if at all possible.
