Fernley Wildlife Refuge

With spring we have more of the local and migratory wildlife stirring more often. This morning, when I opened the front door to go take a short walk before going to work, I saw this in the vacant lot to the east of Fernley House:

These three rabbits stayed put just barely long enough for me to take a photo. Seconds later, a passing truck startled them and they scattered. Although because of the zoom here it looks like they're isolated, in fact this lot has houses and paved streets on three sides, plus the UP railroad tracks to the north.

Later in the afternoon, some of the quail that have moved in next door made an appearance.

This is the same lot where the rabbits were this morning. You can see a neighbor's house beyond to the east. This fellow was roosting in a bush acting as lookout while the others foraged.

Both of these photos were taken from my front porch, albeit with a zoom on the camera. I like our little wildlife refuge. I've been considering leaving some carrots for the rabbits.
