Sunday Drive in the Desert

Yesterday afternoon, I got a bit itchy and when Lisa and I went out to do what was intended to be a brief trip to the grocery store, I suggested a longer drive, which in this case meant going around the 40 Mile Desert. Lisa was agreeable, so we headed east out I-80 to US-95, then south to Fallon, then (after making a couple of stops at stores in Fallon that aren't in Fernley) back to Fernley. We've made trips like this on hot days when the air conditioning isn't working at home just to use the minivan's AC, but not often, and while traversing what is some really bleak land (including the longest gap between exits on all of Interstate 80, I think), I thought about how the pioneers on the California Trail had to cross this with wagons and oxen over (if they were lucky) a day or two with no resources, we did it in a couple of hours just for fun.
