Virtual NASFiC Day 3

Today was the third and final day of the scaled-down and virtual only online version of the 2020 NASFiC. I attended a couple of panels, starting with the panel on "Running SF/F Organizations" that included Cheryl Morgan. (The virtual nature of the convention allowed Cheryl to participate in three panels at a convention nominally in Columbus, Ohio, in a country that prohibits her from entering it.) Then it was the Closing Ceremony, and the convention was over, save for the parties.

2020 NASFiC Post Con Party

(Screenshot taken after getting consent from everyone in the "room.")

The Dead Dog party, like the Saturday Night Bid Parties, were organized via Zoom, with a series of different breakout rooms, of which this was one. It was possible to flit from room to room, although I'm relatively lazy and have a tendency to just sit in one room until I get tired and leave for good.

I do enjoy talking with people who I know and haven't met before in this environment. It's not the same as an in-person party, but it does mean getting some social interaction that I've missed.

NASFiC seemed to go pretty well. Apparently more than 1000 people registered and "attended," which is pretty good. The technical challenges were significant, particularly because many of the likely people to work on it were still coming off CoNZealand. I enjoyed my participation. It's not the same as a "live" convention, and I certainly hope that we'll be able to start holding in-person conventions again someday, but I am glad we have events like this.
