Kevin and Lisa

A Little Setback

As I was heading back to Fremont to unload the van and collapse into bed this evening, I got a call from my father-in-law. Lisa's van had broke down somewhere in the North Bay; she'd patched it together enough to get moving, barely, and she was limping back to San Mateo.

I rushed on to Fremont and unloaded some of the largest stuff, like the folding table, and hurried back to San Mateo, where Lisa had arrived about an hour before me. She thinks it's the fuel pump. She can replace it if we can get a new pump.

I left an e-mail for my management saying that I need to take Friday off for a family emergency. Fortunately, there's nothing pressing me today, although I'll probably end up working double-speed next week. (Possibly I'll end up working an extra day next weekend and make the books come out evenly; we'll see what's up.)

Looking around, my usual haunts for a hotel room in the San Mateo/Redwood Shores area are booked up, so we ended up at a Marriott again; this time it was the Residence Inn on the other side of the freeway from the Marriott where Westercon was. The rooms here are nice studio apartments with full kitchens. It says something about how our minds work that as we were moving in to the room, Lisa commented on how nice a SMOFCon would be in a hotel like this, except that you're required to sign a "No Parties" policy when you check in.

Anyway, we need to get to bed because we need to be up first thing tomorrow to start calling auto parts stores and track down a fuel pump for the van. Let's hope we can find one tomorrow; otherwise Lisa will have to stay through the weekend, which would pump our Westercon expenses up beyond all reasonable expectations, and that's not something we want to do the same year we're going on a three week trip to Japan
