No Time For Trains

Yreka is home of the Yreka Western Railroad, which runs the "Blue Goose" steam excursions. I've always wanted to take this train, but never seem to have the time, and alas, this trip is no exception. They run one train daily, departing 11 AM and returning several hours later after a lunch layover at Montague. I can't hang around that long, I'm afraid. And for that matter, Lisa would probably be annoyed at me if I did the train excursion thing without her.

On the Freeway, Which is Already In Progress...

Not much new to report overnight, as so many of the people I know converge on Yokohama and Worldcon. ashi is already in Japan, and thanks to him posting about it and e-mailing me, jarred me into remembering that I'm supposed to provide copies of my two amateur Doctor Who movies, which we never did get converted to DVD on account of our own computers being too underpowered to do the conversions. As these two films ("The Zombie Legions" and "Those Darn Daleks") do not have a web site of their own, I also cranked out short descriptions of them for his movie showing party.

I'd call Lisa and remind her that we'll need copies of those -- she might want to run off fresh copies, and that will take three hours -- but I'm under strict orders not to call her in the morning as she tries to shift forward at least some of the hours we need to shift. I can't do that myself, much as I'd like to do so, because I must hit the road. Speaking of which, it's time to check out of here, get some breakfast -- but allow some time to go for a walk afterwards -- and get moving.

I'm not sure when I'll be back at an internet connection. I might get a chance to night in Mehama, or tomorrow morning, but possibly not until we get to the hotel at Portland Airport on Sunday. It depends on events in Mehama and what Lisa needs me to do there.

After checking out from the hotel this morning, I headed downtown for breakfast, and after eating, I went for the short walk up to the Yreka Western's station and took a few photos.

Besides the still photos, I happened to be in the right place as the engine moved from the water track to the front of the station, and I shot this video of the engine in action.

After confirming that there was no time to take the trip -- the return from Montague arrives about 2:30 -- I walked back to the van and hit the road. Unfortunately, this short walk didn't help my blood sugar, which tested at 179 an hour later. Sigh.

The drive to Mehama was uneventful, Collapse )

Arriving in Mehama at 4:30, the first thing I did after catching up to Lisa was to pop over to the local hardware store and buy some lottery tickets for the PowerBall drawing. If I was to win, I want our local business -- whose owner has been kind to Lisa -- to get the retailer's bounty, which it pretty substantial by itself when the jackpot is this large.

Tonight we start repacking bags, which I bet will take quite a while.
