The Passing Storm

The last 24 or so hours have been unusually rainy here in Fernley as we have had a tithe of the "atmospheric river" storm that hammered Northern California. The unusual part of this storm for us is that it rained almost constantly, but not in the form of cloudbursts, like the ones that sometimes drop 20% of our annual rainfall in an hour and cause localized flooding. However, flash flood watches were out, and I could hear the Union Pacific dispatcher reading out warnings to trains passing through the area to slow and watch for washouts. Me, I stayed indoors except to get some wood from the wood box to keep the fire burning. While it was damp, it wasn't that cold, so I just had to keep the fire ticking over enough to keep things comfortable.

After the Storm

Late this afternoon, most of the rain had passed and I could get out and take some pictures.

One of the last dark clouds passed to the north of town, making a backdrop for this part of a double rainbow.

The low sun threw these clouds into relief.

Amtrak 6 After the Storm

With the sun nearly gone, an almost two hours late Amtrak California Zephyr, delayed by snow and heavy rain in the Sierra Nevada, powered through Fernley too fast for me to keep in focus in the low light. You can see snow on the Pah Rah Mountains in the distance. As I took this photo, tiny flecks of icy rain fell, but most of the storm was gone.

I'm glad that I did not have to travel anywhere today. Road closures, chain controls, and general misery seemed to be the lot of anyone trying to get across the Sierra today, and the stories I heard of flooding in the Bay Area, including the stretch of I-880 in Fremont near where I used to live, made my work-from-home lifestyle look better all the time.
