Travel Videos
YouTube being YouTube, it suggests videos based on other similar things that I've watched. Consequently, I've been of late watching videos of some of the more luxurious train trips you can take around the world. Now don't get me wrong: I love traveling by train and would love to see some of those areas, but some of the more over-the-top trips appear to me to be mostly traveling restaurant-bar cars where the point is to drink as much high-end liquor and eat expensive meals that you're mainly supposed to admire rather than to eat. So far, I find that the trips that have menus of stuff that Lisa and I would like to actually eat are mostly on "service" trains (like Amtrak or Via Rail, or other rail service of that nature) rather than the special "cruise" trains. That doesn't mean I don't like good food, just that I get impatient with some luxury dining where I think they're trying too hard. Besides, neither Lisa nor I care for alcohol, so promoting a travel experience by emphasizing all of the free-flowing champagne does me no good.
Something else I think I would like to try doing is traveling around Japan not by high-speed train the way we did after Nippon 2007, but by the many overnight ferries that connect the islands. The various videos we've seen make it look quite attractive, although we'd take one of the higher classes of travel, not "capsule class." We've only traveled by long-distance ferry once, and that was on the way to Worldcon 75 in Helsinki where we took the two-night ferry from Germany to Finland. We really enjoyed that trip and would take it again if the opportunity presented itself.
